. . A cleaning liquid or dry powder concentrate composition for extraction cleaning of carpeting includes surfactants, builders and a low foaming cationic surface active agent as an anti-foam agent. A method for simultaneously cleaning a carpet and defoaming any high-foaming residue removed from the carpet using the water extraction cleaning method which comprises contacting the carpet with a cleaning concentrate mixed with water, vacuuming the carpet wherein the concentrate includes sufficient cationic surfactant to interact with any high-foaming anionic detergent removed from the carpet.
