An adjustable steering column comprises a pair of shafts 14 and 16 connected together by a universal joint 30, the shafts being mounted in bearings respectively in lower and upper parts 6 and 8 of a steering column which are pivoted together for angular adjustment by trunnions 24 and 22, the two parts being held in the adjusted position by spring-loaded latch members 34 and 32. The latch members may be freed for adjustment by a lifter ring 36 operated by a lever, not shown. The upper steering shaft 16 comprises two telescoping members 42 and 16 which may be locked in any position of axial adjustment by a key 56 located in a curved groove 76 in the shaft 42 and engaging a keyway 50 in the shaft 16. The key 56 is forced into a locking position by a rod 62 which has a screw-threaded end 66 and may be rotated by a fluted knob 70. |
