In a motor-vehicle limited-slip bevel-type differential gear having clutch packs "A", "B", pre-loaded by plate-springs 28 reinforced (as shown) by bevel tooth reaction, comprising interleaved clutch discs 20, 21 drivingly connected to the differential casing 10 and side wheels 16, 17, respectively, the clutch disc packs are pre-loaded between pressure-plates 26, 27 by axially arranged screws 29 and nuts 30 located through access holes in the differential casing 10 providing external adjustment of the clutch pre-load. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate a second embodiment in which the clutch preload is effected by coil-springs (40) arranged under the heads of the load adjuster screws 29. In this embodiment, the innermost clutch-plate 20a of each clutch is seated on a face (10c) of the casing 10 whereby the bevel tooth reaction is rendered ineffective, the clutches restricting differential movement only to the extent of their pre-load. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a third embodiment in which the clutch pre-load platespring (41) is arranged between the two innermost clutch-plates (20b), (20c) the latter of which is again (as in the second embodiment) seated on the face (10c) of the casing whereby the bevel tooth reaction serves to reduce the clutch pre-load.
