A control shaft in a body moves between two active positions to provide forward or reverse drive motion through a gearbox. The intermediate position is a neutral position. An operating element in the body slides in guides between the two positions and contacts the control shaft through its semi spherical head. The drive element for the operating element comprises an electrical coil assembly which drives the control shaft into the controlled element. The main control element is formed of a two position switch on the vehicle dash panel and connected to the coil assembly by wires. The two positions correspond to the forward and reverse motion of the gearbox. A manual control button acts as a secondary control and also has two positions when acting on the operating element to permit engagement of forward or reverse motion.
