An incandescent lamp contains a getter consisting of a metallic phosphide which reacts at room temperature with water vapour, applied to a surface of the lamp of which temperature during manufacture or use does not rise to the temperature at which the phosphide dissociates. Suitable phosphides are those of aluminium, arsenic, barium, beryllium, calcium, lithium, magnesium and strontium. The getter may be applied as a suspension in a solution of synthetic resin, e.g. polymethyl methacrylate in xylene, as a band 8 on the stem tube 1 of the mount before this is sealed into the bulb. |
