The proposed method provides that the zero transitions of two phase detector output signals are alternatingly counted in such a manner that at the beginning of a counting process first a zero transition of one of the two phase detector output signals, preferably of the first one of the two phase detector output signals (1) is recorded, that a zero transition of the other one of the two phase detector output signals (2), which follows the first one in time, is recorded and that zero transitions of the first phase detector output signal (1) and of the second phase detector output signal (2), respectively, are not recorded or counted if a zero transition of the respective other phase detector output signal has not first been recorded or counted. <IMAGE>
