A method and an apparatus are described for machine-packing a multiplicity of articles of identical shape and size made of shock-resistant material, such as porcelain, which are wrapped with a lateral edge strip made of shock-absorbing material in order to form a spatial packing, a projecting edge of said strip being folded over. To achieve a standardisation when packing articles which are present as a relatively large number of pieces having different sizes and shapes between them, such as, for example, plates, cups and jugs of hotel dinner services, and to tailor the packaging to the machine, the articles to be combined in the spatial packing which are in each case the same size and shape relative to one another are brought together into a compact spatial form which is approximately the shape of a circle. This spatial form is provided from the upper and lower sides with a relatively rigid cover plate and is wrapped with the lateral edge strip, which is connected to the cover plates to form a packaging unit. The apparatus comprises an intermittently rotatable central table with receiving means for the packaging material, magazine stations for the individual components of the packaging means, devices for packing the packaging material with the individual components of the packaging means, gluing stations and conveyors for feeding and taking away the packaging material.
