The invention relates to a shut-off element for gas conduits, with a housing (1) having a gas inlet stub (2), a gas outlet stub (3) and a cock plug (4) rotatably mounted between the two stubs, and with an operating shaft (6), rotatably mounted in a housing cover (5), for the cock plug (4). Arranged between the operating shaft (6) and the cock plug (4) is a compression spring (7) which presses the cock plug (4) down into its upper and lower sealing seat (8a, 8b). Together with a housing collar above the cock plug (4), the housing cover (5) forms a gastight gas-pressure compensation chamber (10). This gas-pressure compensation chamber (10) is connected via at least one bypass (11) to the gas inlet stub (2). A gas-pressure compensation chamber (16) with a bypass (17) leading into the gas inlet stub (2) can likewise be provided below the cock plug (4). <IMAGE>
