A raised sliding roof for motor vehicles is shown, having a cover which can be extended at the rear into a raised inclined position by lifting means and moved relative to the roof cutout into a position in which it partially overlaps the fixed roof surface, any possibility of the operator operating said device incorrectly being excluded and when a glass cover is used it being made extremely easy to black out and to seal it by virtue of the fact that the cover is assigned at least one holding element which blocks its longitudinal displaceability and can be moved into its release position by means of devices which can be adjusted by means of the displacement means acting on the lid, the changing over of the holding element into the release position being effected beyond the closed position of the cover by means of a displacement means drive directed in the closing direction.
