A head switching circuit for a video signal replay device effects the switching-over of a normal and of a special replay head for scanning a helical-track magnetic tape which can be switched to a different speed than with a normal-replay operating mode for a special-replay operating mode. To reduce picture disturbances during the operating-mode switching, the head switching circuit contains a normal-speed detector circuit (20) generating a normal-speed detection signal when the normal tape speed is reached during the operating-mode switching; a system control circuit (19) which generates a normal- or special-replay operating-mode signal during the operating-mode switching, and a head switching control circuit (21) which, during the operating-mode switching from a higher special replay tape speed, keeps the tape scanning switched to the special replay head (18a, 18b) until the normal-replay operating-mode signal and the normal speed detection signal are generated at the same time, and then switches the scanning to the normal replay head (17a, 17b). <IMAGE>
