The goods recording device (1) exhibits a conveyor belt arrangement (10) with a goods support section (11) holding the goods in the orientation at the point of deposition (A) and with at least one scanning device (14) which is arranged in such a manner that it is capable of scanning the goods (100) supported on the conveyor belt arrangement (10) in the area of a predetermined scanning zone (B) on the conveyor belt arrangement (10). The goods (100) are transported in mechanised manner from a delivery point (A) to the scanning zone (B) and held in constant orientation. The code fields (101) of the goods (100) in this orientation are automatically read by the scanning device (14) in the scanning zone (B); in addition, at least one physical characteristic of the goods, for example weight, size or shape, is measured and the result of the recording is checked by comparing the measurement value with a nominal value derived from the code read and, when the result of the check is negative, the associated goods are rejected. This replaces the energy-sapping and work-intensive reading of the code fields by sweeping with a hand reader with fully automatic alignment and reading of the code on the goods so that the activity of the operating personnel at the goods checkout can be restricted to the process of collecting the payment. <IMAGE>
