The flute according to the invention contains a plug mouthpiece which is easier for beginners to handle. Specifically, the flute according to the invention is provided with a plug-like mouthpiece having an elongate tubular part whose external diameter is somewhat less than the internal diameter of the tubular playing end of the flute, so that the tubular part can be inserted into the flute, with a sliding fit, after the conventional transversely blown mouthpiece has been removed. A rib extends around the tubular part and bears against the outer end edge of the flute in a position which is sufficiently far away from the inserted end for the flute to be able to receive and support the arrangement. <IMAGE>
