Hexabromobenzene from benzene and bromine

The reaction is carried out in the presence of catalysts and a solvent which is a bromine-containing aliph. cpd. a bromine and chlorine-containing aliph. cpd. or a mixt. of these cpds. The temp. of the mixture is maintained at 40-140 degrees C, esp. 80-130 degrees C. Preferably, the solvent is dibromoethane. Prefeerably, excess Br2 is removed by introducing an olefin into the mixture. The process is rapid and complete and an excess of Br2 of 10% is required.
