PURPOSE:To reduce initiation voltage for auxiliary dischage, make main discharge to be easily turned into arcs, and enable a high pressure electric-discharge lamp to be lit with a mercury-lamp ballast with a low cost by charging an emission tube with a mixture gas, which consists of neon and below 2% by volume of argon, at a pressure in the range of between 150mm.Hg and 300mm.Hg. CONSTITUTION:An emission tube, in which an auxiliary electrode 3 is installed in addition to a main electrode 2a, is charged with a mixture gas, which consists of neon and below 2% by volume of argon at a pressure in the range of between 150mm.Hg and 300mm.Hg. In addition, the distance l(mm.) between the auxiliary electrode 3 and the main electrode 2 which is adjacent to the electrode 3, and the pressure P(mm.Hg) of the mixture gas are adjusted so that they satisfy the relationship of l<=220/P-0.3. Here, when the pressure of the mixture gas is made below 100mm.Hg, there is almost no arcs produced. In contrast, when the pressure of the mixture gas is made over 300mm.Hg, main discharge doesn't develop entirely even when auxiliary discharge arises. In addition, when the voluminal proportion of argon exceeds 2% of the mixture gas, voltage needed for the initiation of auxiliary discharge slightly increases. Besides, in this condition, due to the influence of mercuric vapor pressure, initiation voltage for auxiliary discharge carried out at a low mercuric vapor pressure and a low temperature increases greatly, and thus an unfavorable result is obtained. |
