A data processing system including a plurality of data devices and interconnection circuitry. The data device includes a first data device with circuitry for issuing instructions including a LOCK instruction and an UNLOCK instruction. Each data device includes switching circuitry responsive to the instructions such that, if the first data device issues a LOCK instruction, the data devices, other than the first data device, are prevented from transferring information over the interconnection circuitry with a LOCK instruction until an UNLOCK instruction is issued by any data means.
