PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound from inexpensive raw materials, easily, in high yield and selectivity, by the two-stage reaction of isobutylene containing n-butenes with phenol in the presence of active earth and an electron donor under specific temperature condition of each stage. CONSTITUTION:Isobutylene containing n-butenes and obtained by removing butadiene from 4C hydrocarbons by-produced in e.g. naphtha cracking, is used as a raw material, and made to react with phenol at 20-100 deg.C, especially 40-80 deg.C for 0.5-15hr, especially for 1-10hr in the presence of active earth and an electron donor to effect the selective reaction of phenol with isobutylene in said raw material. The temperature of the reaction system is raised to 80-200 deg.C, especially 100-150 deg.C, and rearrangement reaction is carried out for 15min-10hr, especially for 30min-5hr. The objective compound can be prepared in high purity and yield suppressing the production of hardly separable and purifiable secbutylphenol. |
