PURPOSE:To avoid drive loss of a torque converter by interposing a clutch between an output shaft of an internal combustion engine and a pump of the torque converter to disengage the clutch in idling and under the neutral condition. CONSTITUTION:A torque transmitting apparatus for an automobile is constituted from a torque transmitting deviceIinterposed between an internal combustion engine 4 and an automatic transmission and a controller II for controlling said deviceI. Also, the torque transmitting deviceIis constituted from a torque converter I, a clutch 2 and a direct coupling clutch 3. The clutch 2 permits a crank shaft 5, i.e. output shaft of the internal combustion engine 4 to be engaged with or diengaged from a pump 6 of the torque converter 1 to interrupt the connection between the crank shaft 5 and the pump 6 when the internal combustion engine 4 is in idling or an automatic transmission is under the neutral condition so that fuel consumption in the idling can be saved. Further, the direct coupling clutch 3 reduces the slippage between the pump 6 of the torque converter 1 and a turbine 7. |
