In pipelines and tanks with organic liquids, in particular fuels, the previously used method of leak testing with the monitoring of the pressure has been made practicable in a closed system. The high failure rates found in tests of this type could be attributed to the effect of temperature fluctuations in space and time. These influencing variables can be adequately detected by the temperature no longer being determined in the base outside the pressure system to be tested, but being determined internally by the measurement of sound travel time in a method largely covering the interior space.
