The umbrella part (1) of the standing umbrella is held by a vertical mast (2) on an umbrella support (3) and can be moved upwards from the spread position into a closed position by means of an adjusting device (4), the canopy rods (12) being placed closely against the mast. On the other hand, the umbrella part can be lowered from the spread position at least to the extent that a limited closed position is achieved, in which case the umbrella forms an approximately conical covering tightly above the ground and can enclose a table, chairs and other implements. Whereas the inner bearings (11) of the canopy rods (12) mounted in the first bearing ring (9) are guided automatically adjustably along the mast (2), the adjusting device (4) which acts in the axial and in the radial direction engages on the strut bearing (15) by means of the spreading strut (16). To close the umbrella by pivoting the spreading strut (16) upwards, the strut bearings (15) are raised and pivoted inwards, as a result of which the canopy rods (12) which have been pushed upwards are pivoted downwards against the mast. During the downward movement from the spreading position, the canopy rods and struts pivot downwards in the same direction. <IMAGE>
