PURPOSE:To prevent a printing paper from remaining in the state of having a leading end part inserted only slightly, prevent printing from being erroneously performed based on mistaken detection of the paper due to the presence of foreign matter, and prevent a needless blank from being formed at the trailing end of the paper, by disposing a printing paper detecting means for detecting the presence or absence of the printing paper, in the vicinity of a printing head. CONSTITUTION:Normally, a light-receiving element 7 receives light reflected by a platen 2. The platen 2 is colored to have a reflectance different from that of a printing paper 4. In this case, a black rubber made platen is used, which has a low reflectance. When the paper 4 is inserted between a platen 2 and a main body 6 and the leading end of the paper is opposed to the light- receiving element 7, the element 7 receives the light reflected by the paper 4 instead of the light reflected by the platen 2. The paper 4 is white in color, so that the reflectance is increased. When printing proceeds further and the element 7 comes not to detect the light reflected by the paper 4, as shown, the run-out of the paper 4 is detected, and printing is finished. |
