A mortar for laying refractory blocks comprises a finely powdered basic or neutral refractory material as the predominant component and plasticizing and binding agents, wherein the refractory material has an overall particle size below 60Á and at least 90% of the material has a particle size below 10Á. The plasticizing agent may be carboxymethylcellulose, gelatine, slurried bentonite or clay and may be present in amount 0À5-5%. The binding agent may be a water-soluble sulphate or sulphite, MgCl 2 , an alkali metal chromate and alkali metal phosphate. The refractory material may consist of magnesia, chrome ore or a mixture thereof, and may contain minor proportions of quartz and/or graphite. |
