Vacuum degassing is effected in a vacuum tank with a small ladle above it. In its bottom this has a hole in the lining which lines up with an opening in the lid of vacuum tank. The hole contains a melt-soluble plug. There is a plug in the hole (4) in the ladle (3) lining. This hole is positioned above the opening (2) in the tank (1). There is a vacuum in the tank (1). The plug (8) burns or dissolves and the melt enters the tank releasing contaminants e.g. O2, H2, CO, N2 etc.. (Provisional Basic previously advised in Week 8445) |
