The invention relates to an arrangement for determining the speed and sense of rotation of a shaft. A soft magnetic rotor (12) having preferably six poles (14-19) extending in the radial direction is arranged for this purpose on the shaft (13). Two field coils (6, 7), which are driven in opposite senses, and a tapping (pick-off) coil (10) are arranged on a stator (1), mounted opposite the rotor, in such a way that as the rotor rotates its poles inductively couple the tapping coil to one field coil in each case in a specific pattern. By means of an evaluation electronic system, this pattern can be used to determine the sense of rotation, and the speed can be determined by means of the temporal sequence of the signals. <IMAGE>
