The device has a tubular housing (1) of round cross-section. This housing is open at both ends and surrounds an elongate heating element (4) which lies in the axis (5) of the housing. The inner surface (2) of the metal housing (1) is polished in such a manner that the heat emitted by the heating element (4) is reflected onto the heating element (4) by the wall of the housing (1). The air situated inside the housing (1) is heated greatly and there is set up by natural convection and without additional drive means a rising air flow inside the housing. <IMAGE>
