A process and an apparatus for preparing a biomass as fermentation substrate for a biogas system are described and reliably result completely automatically in a homogeneous fermentation substrate for an agglomerated uncomminuted biomass, which substrate has a desired solids content and a desired degree of comminution of the solids content of the biomass. The apparatus preferably comprises a plurality of units, a dissolving device, a comminuting device and a conveying pump which are arranged coaxially about a common central axis. This apparatus is then used as component in a preparation pit for the fermentation substrate. <IMAGE>
