Compact or cellular polyurethanes are prepared by reacting compounds containing at least two hydrogen atoms which are reactive towards isocyanates and having a molecular weight of from 400 to 10000 with polyisocyanates in the presence of (alkylamino)alkyl acetoacetates of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<1> = C1-18-alkyl, or C1-18-alkenyl, R<2> = (R<1>)2N-(CH2) m-, a = 0, 1 or 2, b = 0, 1 or 2, c >/= 1 (a + b + c = 3), R<3> = H, C1-3-alkyl or (R1)2N-(CH2)m, m = 1, 2, 3, n = 2 or 3, x = 0, 1 or 2, y = 0, 1 or 2.
