Previously unknown crown ether derivatives of the formula I <IMAGE> where R denotes hydrogen or alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 1 or 2, X is oxygen, sulphur or an NH group, Y denotes hydrogen or nitro, Z denotes a direct linkage, -CH2-, -(CH2)2-4-, -CH2OCH2-, -CH2SCH2-,<IMAGE> or a group of the formula <IMAGE> or <IMAGE> [lacuna] suitable for forming cation complexes, a process for preparing them, and alkali metal ion- or alkaline earth metal ion-selective membrane electrodes which comprise these compounds.
