The extn. was carried out in a cascade of tanks, arranged in a common horizontal plane, with overall countercurrent flow. One phase was passed horizontally through each tank in the series by gravity. The other phase was dispersed into the 1st phase through a horizontal sieve located near the bottom and passed vertically through the continuous phase. Then the settled dispersed phase was pumped to the next tank. Thus, propionic acid transfers into the aq. phase where the peracid was formed and the peracid transfers into the orq. phase. The plant consists of 3 series of 9 cells.
