Emulsion explosives were produced by mixing hydrocarbon oils and aq. oxidizing salt (NH4NO3 and NaNO3) solns. in the presence of free fatty acids and NH4OH or an alkali (NaOH)and adding hollow microspheres (-5 vol.%). The fatty acid salt emulsifier was produced in situ. The Product contains free acid and free hydroxide, and the amt. of the latter was larger than that which was produced by hydrolysis when the fatty acid salt was used. The fatty acids were com. oleic acid(73wt.% oleic acid), stearic acid (95% purity), and a mixt. of linoleic acid 63, unsatd. fatty acids 31, and satd. fatty acid 6%.
