In the case of a motor-vehicle seat which can be displaced longitudinally in running and guide rails and the displacing movement of which is transmitted via pinions, held on the end in a positionally fixed manner by a preferably motor-driven shaft, to a rack connected to the running rail, and the shaft is mounted in positionally fixed bearing plates, when forces act in the vehicle longitudinal direction on the motor-vehicle seat, they are introduced by a locking device in a manner bypassing the displacing device into the bearing plates. The locking device is composed of a lifting device with at least one spring-loaded locking bolt which during the longitudinal adjustment is at a distance from the running rail and after the longitudinal adjustment has taken place comes to bear resiliently against the running rail or, with an appropriate seat position, immediately engages in an associated opening of a row of holes connected to the running rail.
