In a leaf hinge comprising a pair of leafs having cooperating knuckles through which a hinge pin runs, recesses are formed at the adjacent ends of the knuckles and in the recesses plastics bushings are located, the faces of the bushings protruding slightly from the recesses into bearing contact with one another. The extent of protrusion is about 0.03 inches, this being small enough to maintain the required contact, but to remain unseen from the exterior of the hinge. One of the knuckles rotates relative to the pin and the bussing of this knuckle, and a pref. material for this bushing is an acetal resin contg. low friction fibres, for example of PTFE or PEP. Phenolics contg. graphite and polycarbonate contg. PTFE have been found equally useful. The other of the bushes, which does not rotate relative to the pin may also be of the above materials, high density polythene also being usable. The hinge has better wear properties, plus vastly improved life.
|
