An electrical starter motor for internal combustion engines is proposed, which has a drive shaft (3) which carries a meshing drive, armature (4) and commutator (5) and is held at one end (10), such that it can rotate, in a sliding bearing (9) of a bearing cover (6) which closes the housing (1) of the starter motor. A sponge-like sealing ring (17) which surrounds the drive shaft (3) is arranged between the commutator (5) and the bearing cover (6). Said sealing ring (17) protects the sliding bearing (9) against dust produced by brush wear, and stores additional lubricant for the sliding bearing (9). Both are used to extend the life of the sliding bearing (9) and hence of the starter motor. <IMAGE>
