PURPOSE:To improve the starting property of an electrodeless discharge lamp which is excited by microwaves and emits light by sealing a specified amount of natural radioactive element in its glow tube besides discharge maintaining sealing materials. CONSTITUTION:Start assisting rare gas such as argon and discharge maintaining sealing materials such as gallium and mercury iodide are sealed in the glow tube consisting of transparent silica glass of an electrodeless discharge lamp 1, while natural radioactive element whose simple substance component is rhenium, ruthenium, or samarium is also sealed exceeding its specified amount. Besides, microwaves are radiated into a cavity 7 from a magnetron 4 through a waveguide tube 6 and the lamp 1 is turned on by its microwave electromagnetic field. As a result, the time after power is applied and before the discharge start can be reduced sharply without affecting optical characteristics by the electrolytic dissociation capacity of radiation that is radiated from the natural radioactive element. |
