The apparatus contains a rotatable disc (2) which carries the winding elements (6), weft-thread end clamps (7), a winding-body holder (4) and weft-thread clamps (5). Above the disc (2), a device (12) for transporting the weft thread in the direction opposite to the movement of the latter during winding is arranged underneath the weft-thread clamps (5) in order to form a short end projecting from the weft-thread end clamp (7). This device (12) is formed by a bar (14) which is mounted in a stationary manner above the disc (2) and which is arranged in the zone where the insertion devices (1) and the winding elements (6) meet, in such a way that, as seen in a top view, the bar (14) intersects the path of movement (B) of the winding elements (6) at two points (D) and (E). One point (D) is located in front of the common portion (C) of the paths (A) and (B), but the other point (E) is located above the common portion (C) of the paths (A) and (B). This makes it possible to simplify the construction and operation of the apparatus considerably. <IMAGE>
