A variable resistor having a box-shaped housing which is provided on its inner wall surfaces with resistors and conductors. In this variable resistor, in which a slide supporting a contact piece consists of insulating material and can be displaced via an arm which projects with respect to the covering surface of the housing and passes through an elongated guide slot in it, with the object of keeping penetrating fluid away from the resistors and the contact pieces, an elongated groove-shaped or trough-shaped component is provided within the housing, which component extends in the radial direction of the guide slot and is arranged under it, the ends of this component abut against the end walls of the housing and an outlet flow groove is provided in this region which groove connects the external space to the internal space of the trough-shaped component.
