The de-icing system, for removing snow and ice from roof of buildings, pavements. Sports grounds etc., consists of a heated mat (14,15) placed over the snow (16) or ice. The mat consists of a multilayer plastics foil and a resistance heating wire (22) meandering between two of the layers (18,20). The mat has thermal insulation (26) on one side. A radiation-reflecting layer (24) is located on one side of the plane containing the resistance heating wire. Both the heating wire and the thermally-insulating layer may have a radiation-reflecting layer. The radiation-reflecting layers are made of aluminium. The wire can be replaced by tubing carrying a warm fluid.
