A method and a device for transferring hard, particulate material, for example coal, are devised. A high-pressure transfer device (20) with a specially designed screening wall (42) is used to achieve this. The high pressure transfer device (20) has a rotor (21) which is provided with pockets, two (22) of which are continuous in a diametral direction and are perpendicular to one another. A casing (23) encloses the rotor (21) and has four apertures (24-27), which are distributed around its circumference. The rotor (21) or the apertures (24-27) are provided with a screening wall (42) in order to screen out particles which are larger than the prescribed size as they are passed through the device (20). The screening wall (42) is preferably assigned to one of the apertures (24-27) of the casing (23), and injection nozzles (40) are provided which spray compressed liquid against the screening wall (42), in order to flush out any particles which may have been deposited there and to prevent damage to the screening wall (42). Activation of the fluid injection nozzles (49) is timed to match the rotary movement of the rotor (21). Another embodiment has a screening wall (75) made of rods (76) which have square or circular cross-sections and are arranged in the enlarged central region of each of the pockets (22). <IMAGE>
