<p>PURPOSE:To realize a liquid crystal optical device which is operated at a high speed and is high in transmissivity, by adjusting an orientation treating direction on 2 substrates constituting a nematic liquid crystal panel, and a polarization plane of 2 polarization plates. CONSTITUTION:In a liquid crystal panel, a liquid crystal layer 1 is sealed between a substrate 2 provided with an electrode 4 and a substrate 3 provided with an electrode 5, and is selaed up tightly, holding a space of thickness (d) shown by a seal 6. The surface of the substrate is treated by orientation treating agents 10 and 11, and is rubbed with absorbent cotton. On both sides of the 2 substrates, a polarization plate 8 and 7 are arranged. 20 and 21 show the orientation treating directions, and they are rubbed in the direction as indicated with an arrow. When the liquid crystal panel is viewed from the upper direction, 20 and 21 are set as the orientation direction of the lower substrate and the upper substrate, respectively. 22 and 23 show polarization planes of the polarization plates. 24 shows an angle phi0 made by 2 orientation treating directions, and an angle shown by 26 is phi0/2. An angle made by a bisector 25 and the polarization plane 23 of one polarization plate is phi, and in order to minimize transmissivity of light in a state that light has been shaded, the planes of the 2 polarization plates are always placed vertically 29. According to said constitution, an angle made by the plane of polarization 22 of the other polarization plate, and the bisector 25 becomes 90 deg.-phi.</p> |
