<p>Vulcanising rubbery high mol. wt epihalohydrin polymers having a polyether structure consisting of repeat units of the structure where x is a halogen having an atomic wt >19 is performed by mixing the polymer with (a) a thioalkanoic curing agent consisting of the acids or metal salts of thioalkanoic acid having the structure where x is >=1 R is H when x=1 and a multivalent org. bridging gp. when x is >1, and R1 is an alkylidene hydrocarbon gp where the S atom and carbonyl C atom are sepd by is not >2 consecutively connected C atoms, the curing agent being present as 0.001-0.03 mols/100 pts wt. polymer, (b) about 1-5 pts wt tert amine/100 pts. wt polymer the amine having a low volatility at temps =275 degrees F and when a) is an acid (c) about 1-10 pts. wt/100 pts. wt polymer, of a metal base cpd chosen from alkali metal carboxylates, polyvalent metal oxides and polyvalent metal salts of carboxylic acids. The resulting mixt. is heated at 300-425 degrees F to vulcanise the polymer.</p> |
