PURPOSE:To prepare methacrolein in high yield by a catalytic reaction of isobutylene with molecular oxygen at high temperature in a gas phase, by using a composition comprising a Mo-Bi-Fe-Co catalyst, a specific amount of Cs, and V and/or Pd, as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Methacrolein is prepared in an yield of as high as about 83%, by the reaction of isobutylene with molecular oxygen at 250-500 deg.C, pref. 300-450 deg.C for 0.3-20 sec., pref. 0.5-15 sec. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a composition of formula (X is V, Pd; a-g are numbers of atoms, when a is 12, b-f are 2-12, 0.5-7, 0.1-5, 0.0005-0.5, and 0.01-2, respectively, and g is a number defined by the valences of elements, and usually 78-142). When a mixture of hydrocarbons containing n-butene is used as the starting feed, 1,3- butadinene can be obtained simultaneously with methacrolein. |
