The invention relates to a process for the production of a coating material, in particular for coating metals against corrosion, which consists of a coal-tar product and is applied to the base material, and proposes, for the achievement of simplified application and good, permanent protective action, that the coating material is formed from a mixture of amorphous silica, coal-tar pitch, white quartz sand, alumina and a silicone dye and also water, the mixing ratio being in proportion to the material thickness of the base material and the individual base substances mentioned above forming a homogeneous substance corresponding to the layer thickness. A separate application of anticorrosive agents is unnecessary, since this is contained as a coating component (silica).
