In internal combustion engines with valve timing gear, valve covers (3) are fixed on their cylinder heads (2) in order to reduce the radiated sound and to protect the exhaust and refill valves and their actuating elements. In accordance with the object of the invention, these valve covers are to be designed in such a way that they produce a further additional benefit which in particular improves the ease of engine maintenance. For this purpose each valve cover (3) on its upper side is largely constructed from plane wall parts (4, 5, 6), the outsides of which do not run parallel to the cylinder head base (7) but in such a way that at least one of these wall parts (4 or 5) forms an at least approximately horizontal access platform (8 or 9) on the engine, regardless of whether this is of in-line or V type. In addition one of these wall parts, namely the wall part (6) of the valve cover (3) forms a base (10) of at least one hollow for depositing tools, small parts, working material or the like bounded by a reinforcing rib (11) at the outside of the valve cover (3). The accessibility of the valve covers and the provision of hollows for depositing tools on the latter considerably increases the ease of engine maintenance, since all measures contribute to making the working facilities easier for personnel. <IMAGE>
