A seat has a seat element and backrest mounted on a seat frame (4) that is part of a stand, which is equipped with a scissor mechanism and suspension device. The suspension device can be adjusted by means of a setting device (24) in order to change the suspension characteristics of the chair. Both the suspension device and the setting device (24) are situated in the seat frame. Two of the springs (23) in the suspension device are located on each side of the seat frame.
