The object of the invention is to save fuel in the operation of a motor vehicle and to safeguard the engine and transmission. The invention is characterised in that the instantaneous engine operating state is compared with the position of the accelerator (= fuel actuating device) or the linkage leading from this to the throttle valve and/or transmission device and/or the position of the throttle valve itself. This sensing of the said position is possible both magnetically and electrically, mechanically, electronically or optically in digital or analog form. It is now possible by means of the invention to immediately detect the very first stages leading to a possibly unfavourable operating state and, where necessary comparing this with the actual instantaneous operating state (engine speed, speed of travel), to indicate larger differences (for example, too much fuel supply = "racing start" or too little fuel supply = engine braking) visually or audibly to the driver and thereby to modify his driving behaviour or to restore more economical driving behaviour by switching on an open or closed loop control circuit.
