To cool in particular dust-laden air in underground mining, so-called air coolers are used in which indirect cooling of the air is effected by means of cooling water or cooled water. These cooling tubes are in each case allocated to cassettes of identical stack-like design which are to be connected to one another via connecting branches. The housing is assembled from frame-like connecting branches, formed from steel angles, and spacer plates screwed to the connecting branches and forming sides, covers and bases, the cooling tubes being connected via screw-in fittings to the feeding or discharging distributor tube. To strengthen the housing and at the same time support the tube stacks, supporting bars are provided which run in the air direction and are supported on the steel angles. The covers and bases are equipped in such a way that the tube stacks can be cleaned at intervals via a cleaning rotor, the dirty water being intermittently drawn off via a bore in the base. The rectangular housings can be readily transported and if need be they can be assembled or dismantled or overhauled underground even under restricted conditions. <IMAGE>
