Process for the preparation of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid

A process for the preparation of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid from anhydrous potassium 2-naphthoxide and carbon dioxide is described. This process is improved by first forming a mixture of 0.8 to 1.45 mol of 2-hydroxynaphthalene/equivalent of potassium base, then dehydrating this mixture, then introducing carbon dioxide at about 255 to 280 DEG C and a carbon dioxide pressure of about 20 to 90 psi, and carrying out this process with stirring and heating the reaction mixture at this pressure and at this temperature.
