In a rotary mowing machine with a ground-facing box girder connectable via a mounting or trailing device to an agricultural tractor or suchlike traction engine and, in the operating position, running over the ground with a lateral offset relative to the traction engine, with a number of disc-shaped knife carriers provided on the circumference with cutting knives, the directions of rotation of the driving pinions for the knife carriers and their mutual working association can be varied, as desired, at any moment. This makes it possible to form groups of cooperating knife carriers, by means of which the deposit of mown material is restricted to strips which leave at least one free interspace in the region of the swath of mown material deposited over the working width of the machine. A traction engine can thus run with its wheels over a region kept free of mown material which consequently experiences no undesirable compaction making it difficult to handle after the mowing and caused by the wheels of the traction engine.
