The building block (1) consists of a hollow, cubic base body (2) which has five side walls (3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e) and an open side (4). At least one pair of passage apertures (5, 6; 7, 8) is present in each of the side walls. On two mutually opposite side walls (3b, 3d), catch elements (9, 10) are affixed to the inside thereof and project on the open side (4) of the base body (2) beyond the latter. At the free ends, the catch elements (9, 10) are provided with catch cams (11). The side walls (3b, 3d) carrying the catch elements (9, 10) are resiliently flexible outwards in the region of the open side (4). When the building blocks (1) are assembled, the catch elements (9, 10) of one building block latch into the apertures (5, 6 and 7, 8 respectively). One building block (1) can have another, identical building block affixed to all sides thereof. <IMAGE>
