Process for the metallic colouring of porous materials without current for decorative, corrosion-preventing and/or radiation-absorbing purposes, in which only the pores in a surface layer are activated by catalysts, and metal ions at the activated sites are chemically reduced in an immersion bath, the metal being deposited in the pores or growing out from them and the colouring taking place on account of the metal dispersion thus formed.
