To determine the relative elongation of the edges of rolled strips (1) during transfer in relation to the central areas (4) of the strip, the vertical distance of the edge of the rolled strip (1) from a reference point (X) is periodically measured and the horizontal speed of the rolled strip (1) during the respective measurement is specified. The vertical distances (ZA) and the speeds (v) are stored. The square root of the sum of the differences ( DELTA z<2>) of the squares of the distances and of the product of the associated speed and measurement period ( DELTA t) is calculated for in each case two successive measured values (ZA) for the distance. The square roots are then summated. The ratio between the sum of the products of the measurement periods and speeds (v) and the sum of the square roots is subtracted from one. <IMAGE>
